ASK BIG QUESTIONS: WHAT DOES WINNING MEAN TO YOU? BY MORIEL BERK

Winning in general terms could be associated with beating someone else in a competition. This is a simplistic definition for the term. When given the chance to think about it, winning can mean so much more. It does not have to do with competition at all. Winning is about doing something for yourself or for others that makes you feel good. This could be as simple as winning a smile from a friend when you know they are having a bad day. I define winning as giving back to something or someone. Giving back is a large part of what it means to be a part of a Jewish community. Ever since I was young I was taught the importance of mitzvot. The feeling you get when you take your time to give back to a community that means something to you is the same feeling you get when you win in a competition. It’s the overwhelming feeling of goodness that encourages us to continue these acts and teach them to future generations. At UD Hillel, there are many ways to give back to the University community as well as the Delaware Jewish community. I give back as the development intern at UD Hillel by trying to raise funds for the programs and community that have helped me grow as a young adult. It is the small impact that I make in this community, but more importantly the comfort and support I receive from my peers at UD that makes me feel like a winner.
