Giving Tuesday

Giving Tuesday is no ordinary Tuesday. It’s a day to give back, and acknowledge all the resources that you have been given. Positioned at the beginning of holiday season, #GivingTuesday is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. The goal is to give back to organizations that make an impact around the time that we are giving gifts to many of our friends and family.

Here at Hillel, we hold a phone-a-thon, in which volunteers call a number of possible donors to ask for donations before and on Giving Tuesday, on November 27. As a Giving Tuesday Intern at Hillel, my job revolves around making Giving Tuesday the most successful event it can be, specifically through marketing the event and recruiting phone calling volunteers. I work with Bill Baker, a Hillel Development Assistant, to try to encourage students to come out and make phone calls.

What is phone banking like? Students are given lists of people to call, while also able to call family and friends they know that would possibly be able to donate. The money that is raised goes towards things like Shabbat dinners and other programs run through Hillel. This year’s Giving Tuesday campaign is called Be Well @ Hillel, and we are specifically fundraising to support Hillel’s ability to continue to bring a wide variety of wellness programs to our students. As making phone calls also counts as community service hours, participating in the phone-a-thon is a great way to get involved on campus and specifically in Jewish life and at Hillel. See you on Giving Tuesday!
